Eat Your Way to Healthy Skin

You’ve heard it before: “You are what you eat” and “Beauty is on the inside,” but what you might not realize is when it comes to your skin care regimen, both just might be true. It's more than a gimmick and catchy phrases, what you eat impacts how your skin looks. Fast foods, as much as we love them, are loaded with salt (known to cause tissue swelling), has super greasy fat (increasing inflammation), and is loaded with sugar.

Do I really need to go on?

I didn't think so. All is not lost, though. There are loads of superfoods - food that have essential nutrients with proven health benefits - that you can snack on instead of the greasy stuff. Below are three of my favorites:

Blueberries
Blueberries
The USDA ranked this badboy numero uno in antioxidant activity in comparison to 40 fruits and vegetables. Stiff competition. Blueberries contain antioxidants that help protect from premature aging. The best is to add them into yogurt (yogurt is full of antibiotics that help fight acne!)

Almonds
Almods are super yum and make a great on-the-go snack. Keeping it desk side is an amazing way to not only munch on something when you get hungry after lunch but it prevents you from running out and buying unhealthy snacks or candies. Raw, unsalted almonds are the best. The best part: almonds are packed with vitamin E, which is essential for giving skin that “glowing” look. Vitamin E also helps to repair skin tissue and maintain skin moisture.

Spinach

I may be in the minority but I LOVE spinach. Popeye was on to something here. This leafy green veggie is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, like lutein which keeps your eyes healthy. A good source of potassium, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids spinach can be incorporated into a meal as a side instead of lettuces. The vitamin A in spinach also promotes healthy skin by retaining moisture in the skin.

What are some of your favorite superfoods for healthy skin?
