A Break of Sorts...

Hey gals!

Ok so life is getting in the way. I'm kind of going through things right now and I just need to focus. So..what does that mean for MissWhoever You Are?? I'll be on a mini hiatus. I'm taking the rest of the week off to study for school, focus on my internship and part time job. Fear not, dear friends, for I shall return!

In the mean time...take care of yourselves. Outer beauty is minuscule when compared to your inner happiness and health- both physical and mental.

Arlenis Sosa Honored at the Latin Pride Awards

Lancôme spokesperson and fellow Domincana Arlenis Sosa was honored at the Latin Pride National Awards last Thursday night in Boston. These awards recognize the most successful representatives of the Latino community in sports, film, music, education and fashion (duh).

L-R: Ada Aimee de la Cruz (Miss Dominican Republic 2009) and Arlenis

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

The annual celebration takes place in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month to commemorate and celebrate the positive contributions of the Latino community to the American culture. Arlenis wore a gown by Oscar de la Renta (a fellow Dominican brotha), a designer who has supported her every season that she’s been a model and her makeup was done by artist Betty DePierre. Arlenis said that she was quite nervous, especially when she looked out at the audience filled with Latinos, and was overcome with pride and gratitude.

I feel like the über Arlenis stalker because I'm constantly looking forward to what she does next. We all know that one of my biggest issues with the fashion (and sometimes beauty) community is the lack of diversity on the runway, ad campaigns and magazines. Arlenis, however, has been on top of her game scoring covers, blazing the catwalk and making Dominicans proud.

Right on girl!

Like the stalker I am, I found out that Arlenis just shot a major Lancôme makeup ad in Paris (ohh la la...) with a photographer. According to Lancôme, it's pretty hush hush so you KNOW I'm excited to see this. She’s also working on a special charity project to benefit the underprivileged in her country. ¡ay Dios mío!, This girl does not stop! Stay tuned for details on that one. With Paris Fashion Week starting this week, I can't wait to see what shows she will be in (I'm rooting for Chanel!)

Beauty School Sues Student over Facebook Page

Facebook mania has landed one beauty school student in the courtroom. The Chicago Tribune reported last week that the The Salon Professional Academy in Elgin, Illinois is suing student Nicholas Blacconiere for unauthorized use of the school's logo and emotional damage caused by defamatory comments posted on the page.

Get this...they're seeking $50,000 in damages. WOWZA! That's one year of schooling at some institutions!

According to the article, Blacconiere created a page called TSPA RobinHood and invited other students to join the page. It was there that they [students] vented, thus leading to the claims of derogatory names used to call teachers and defamatory comments.

"Don't be afraid to post comments on whats going on, this is yor voice too. All for one and one for all right?!" (sic)

The article states, "Printouts of the Facebook page included in the complaint show comments that accuse teachers at the academy of subpar teaching skills and promiscuity".

As a current undergrad studying Communications, future law school attendee AND social media fanatic, I find this all to be amazing. We all know that social networking sites (ahem, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace..although MySpace is soooo 2007) take up more than enough time of young people my age. I can't tell you how many times I've updated this blog when I should be writing a paper...or updated my Twitter status saying "I should be doing homework".

This lawsuit could set precedent in how students (and people in general) are held accountable for insults posted on the interwebs. The lines of free speech are blurred when it comes to the web and it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Be careful what you type my friends.

In the meantime, if you have to bash a professor...go to your local coffee shop, grab a tall coffee and just verbally air it out ;)

Get the Look: Kay Panabaker at the LA Premiere of FAME

Sparkling on the red carpet was 19 year old, Kay Panabaker. The "Fame" star walked the red carpet at the LA premiere of the 1980s remake in a short red number and gorgeous makeup, courtesy of mark celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg.

For her face, Greenberg said, “I started by applying mark Speedway Do Everything Makeup in Ivory to her skin. I then blended mark Get Bright Hook Up Highlighter in Light under her eyes to conceal and highlight above her cheekbones. Then I applied mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Cheeky to the apples of her cheeks to give her a warm glow, and a touch of mark Glo Xpert in Candle Glo for a highlighting effect.”

Her pretty eye makeup required a couple of steps. “Kaye wore a gorgeous red dress, so we wanted to go glam for her look. For her eyes, I started by applying mark I-Mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Biscotti as a wash all over her eye and then smudged mark I-Mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Luvstruck in her creases. Next, I added mark I-Mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Fairy Dust to her inner corners and a little Plum Velvet on the outside crease. I then lined her top lash line with mark Get In Line Hook Up Waterproof Eyeliner in Violet and then lightly lined her lower lash line with mark Eye Glimmer in Glammed. To finish the eyes, I applied two coats of mark Make It Big Mascara in Raven.

Pretty in pink, the lips were easy, simple and fast, “I completed Kaye’s look by applying mark Tinted Sheenstick Hook Up Lip Balm in Playful and mark Glow Baby Glow Hook Up Lip Gloss in Pink Crush to her lips.”

Get the Look: Kherington Payne at the FAME Premiere

A reinvention of the original 1980 hit film, "Fame" follows a talented group of dancers, singers, actors, and artists over four years at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. At the Los Angeles premiere of the updated classic, newcomer Kherington Payne rocked the red carpet.

The So You Think You Can Dance alum (season four) had her makeup done by celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali, who gave the rising movie queen a graphic, smokey eye, pretty golden skin and shimmery nude mouth.

To start, Vanessa prepped the skin with Lancôme's Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate, which kept Kherington’s skin fresh in the 100 degree heat. Lancôme's Effacernes in Light Bisque -Vanessa’s favorite formula—was dabbed underneath the eyes. Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Stick was applied on select areas with a small brush and blended with the fingers. Lancôme's Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose delivered a glowy look and was accented with Giorgio Armani Beauty's Fluid Sheer #2 on the cheek and brow bones. On the T-zone, Vanessa dusted Lancôme's Photôgenic Sheer Loose Powder.

For Kherington’s dramatic eyes, Vanessa layered Shu Uemura's Pressed Eye Shadow in ME Black #990 and ME Olive #471. To define and elongate the lash line, Vanessa used Lancôme's Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony and paired it with Shu Uemura's Painting Liner in Black just at the lash line (on the top lid only) and on the inner rim of the eye. The finishing touch for the eyes consisted of a few generous coats of Lancôme's Ôscillation Mascara in Black.

For the lips, Lancôme's La Laque Fever Lipshine in Iridescent was the lippie of choice, giving Kherington a shimmery nude lip that dazzled on the red carpet.

Step Ya Shoe Game Up with Shoe Woo!

Working in Midtown, there are tons of stores that open up and promise to dazzle you with just one visit. Some get you excited. Others you wish never existed. I see it all the time and I have become desensitized to the whole "Grand Opening" shindig.

Or so I thought. One store has got my eye and it's not just because I pass it on my lunch break every day.

Shoe Woo is a new store opening on October 1st on 59th & Lexington Ave. I always see the men working on the inside of the store, and if it's anything like the picture to the left...I'm in there like swimwear.

Designed for shoe lovers, by shoe lovers, Woo celebrates you and your passion for fabulous shoes. Considering that I'm in desperate need of some pretty footwear, I'm kind of excited.

Make sure you follow them on Twitter, @ShoeWoo  (there are rumors of giveaways happening)!

Karl Lagerfeld is a doll.jpg

As I sit on the L train (in Brooklyn) doing my normal rounds of viewing blogs and sites on my BlackBerry, I came across this little guy.

Thank God for mobile blogging :)

Tokidoki, the Italian maker of Japanese-inspired collectible figurines, has immortalized the Karl Lagerfeld (the man behind Chanel and, well, Karl Lagerfeld). I have to admit, I'm a sucker for Tokidoki and they're good with this one.

Decked out in a skinny black suit, rhinestone-studded tie and belt, and dark shades, this is Karl Lagerfeld if he were 10 inches tall and made of plastic. The look all come from his K Karl Lagerfeld Collection, natch.

Be quick if you want this, though. Only 1,000 figurines will be created, costing 129 euros, or about $190 at current exchange. They will be sold at Todoki flagships in New York, Milan and Los Angeles and select specialty stores for holiday retailing, with Colette (in France) getting the exclusive launch next month.

Fix Ya Face! Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse

I am a HUGE foundation junkie. There. I said it. Foundation is the one makeup item (next to lipstick/lip gloss) that I absolutely must have at all times. However being a woman of color AND a woman on a budget, finding something that provides great coverage while matching my skintone always proves to be a problem.

I've always been a huge fan of Maybelline (I can't tell you how many times I've practiced my very own "Maybe It's Maybelline" commercial... Pathetic) and one of my favorite aspects of this company is the fact that their foundations match me so well, especially for a drugstore brand.

All summer long, I've been using Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse foundation for an even and flawless look. Foundation and summer seems to be an oxymoron to beauty girls everywhere but Dream Liquid Mousse made it work!

This little bottle delivers an airbrushed natural finish in a lightweight liquid form. Dream Liquid Mousse is a unique hybrid air-whipped liquid texture that does not sink into pores or feel heavy on the skin. My skin never broke out and it never melted off of my face (and I'm talking New York City heat here people). This is the wonder kid of drugstore makeup! A little goes a long way- I only use about one or two pumps for my entire face.

My shade is Cocoa and I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone looking for foundation without breaking the bank. If you're a foundation newbie, this is a definite must have because it is easy to work with, lightweight (so it does not clog your pores nor feel like you're wearing a mask), and with 12 shades available it shouldn't be a problem finding th right one for you.

Spoiled Pretty Spoils Us Silly!

Ok, so remember how much I was OBSESSING over Kim Kardashian's makeup at the 2009 Emmy's? Well, imagine my face when I saw that super blogger Daneen over at Spoiled Pretty got the rundown from her makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic.

*dead*

I literally stopped what I was doing and DEMANDED that my BlackBerry AND desktop be logged on to her website (whichever loaded first!)

Be sure to check out the Spoiled Pretty exclusive on Kim's look!

Need It. Want It. Juicy Couture Lipstick Charm

Juicy Couture sure as hell knows how to tempt a gal. The Juicy Couture Lipstick Charm ($48) is quite honestly the one thing missing from my life right now.

Way to steal a beauty girl's heart JC.

NYFW S/S 2010: Backstage at Marchesa

Pretty much guaranteed a beautiful collection from Marchesa, I always look forward to see what the makeup artists come up with that will match the beauty, elegance and femininity that Georgina Chapman normally comes up with. This season NARS Cosmetics was behind the look with makeup artist Talia Shobrook as the lead. The look consisted of simple, romantic and beautiful skin contoured with varying formulas.

“We contoured the skin with matte and shimmery textures and added feathers to the eyes to provide dimension to the face,” explained Talia. A matte face was illuminated with a bit of shimmer. Feather lashes, custom created by NARS from the feathers on the Marchesa dresses, gave excitement to an otherwise simple look.

The inspiration behind the collection came from Madame Butterfly. “I wanted to capture the real look of Japan, create layers and bits of origami,” said designer Georgina Chapman. The whimsical creations based in sculpted layers balanced the soft, bare faces that were accentuated with long lashes.

For the face, Talia mixed NARS Sheer Matte Foundation with NARS Orgasm Illuminator (a new product coming out for Spring 2010) and gently blended all over the face. To tame redness, concealer was added only if needed. Using her fingers, she applied NARS Luxor Multiple (lookout for it for Holiday 2009) across the cheekbone. She then applied NARS Powder Foundation under the eyes and to the center of forehead. Using NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Artisan Brush, the cheeks were contoured with NARS Nepal Single Eyeshadow (eyeshadow as a contour? neat, eh??). A mixture of NARS Thebes Cream Duo Eyeshadow was added on the cheekbones, bridge of nose and on the upper temples.

To play up the eyes, NARS Abyssinia Single Eyeshadow was used all over the eye up to the brow. The top and lower lashlines were lined with NARS Iceberg Eyeliner Pencil. Curled lashes had one light coat of NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara on the top lashes only. The custom feather lashes were added using a clear eyelash glue.

To finish of this simple look, NARS Cruising Lipstick was added with fingers on the lips. Cruising is one of NARS' newest babies due out Spring 2010.

NYFW S/S 2010: Roughin' It Up at Rodarte

The Mulleavy sisters are one of the most daring yet undoubtedly talented female fashion duos that New York has got to offer. So it's no surprise that the hair and makeup at their Spring/ Summer 2010 collection would be just as edgy and appealing as the frocks going down the runway.

Famed hairstylist Odile Gilbert did hair for Aveda.

“Kate and Laura wanted something different— a bold hair look that would be unique to Rodarte, and really echo their collection. They were inspired by the work of photographer, Edward Curtis, who captured stunning images of the Native American peoples. They were also moved by the idea of a young girl from the country who wants to be sophisticated but doesn’t have much, so she twists a thin veil of black wool stylishly through her hair. The netting of black wool echoes the collection’s knits and textures. The look is raw, hard, and organic.” -Odile Gilbert

The look is edgy and daring, yet natural, with hair pinned away from the face in a thin veil of black wool. Hair is matte, roughed-up and textured, and raked back into a braid-like cascade.

Step 1: Dampen hair with water and prep with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add volume. Scrunch hair with fingers while blow-drying.

Step 2: Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion generously on hair (using most of the bottle), working in layers, to create matte, roughed-up texture throughout. Massage product into the hair and scalp with fingers.

Step 3: Once Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion is worked in, scrunch and twist hair with fingers while blowing-drying. Spray hair liberally with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for workable hold.

Step 4: Twist the sides of hair back and secure at ear-level with black hair pins.

Step 5: Prepare a piece of natural black wool by spreading it out with fingers to create a thin veil. Beginning across the top of the head, a couple of inches from the hairline, spread the wool out delicately, pinning it securely in place. Continue draping the organic wool over hair to ends, securing in place with pins.

Step 6: Twirl the wool around the ends and tie into a knot, creating the illusion of the end of a ponytail. Spray thoroughly with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray to hold the look in place.

NYFW S/S 2010: Marc by Marc Jacobs

For the Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010 show, Shiseido’s Artistic Director Dick Page created a quintessential punk rock look with a “painted on lip color” that was “inspired by the bright clothes”.

Lips were prepped with Aquafor before applying color to the lips. Next, he applied Shiseido's Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Fuschia (RS320) followed by a high pigment bright pink powder. The lips were completed with a dusting of the Translucent Loose Powder from the Fall 2009 Collection.

Eyes were left completely natural. Dick then used the Natural Eyebrow Pencil from the Fall 2009 Collection if needed.

Kim Kardashian at the 61st Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards

Makeup wise, Kim Kardashian can do no wrong in my eyes. She always knows how to add the drama whether it's an intense smokey eye or wickedly bold lip. At the 61st Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards, Kim wore a white asymmetrical dress by Ina Soltani, shoes by Gucci, Swarovski clutch and Siera ring.
Her makeup was done by her über talented makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic (follow him on Twitter!). I need to find out these products stat, especially that blush!

Kourtney Kardashian at the 61st Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards

A very pregnant but glowingly beautiful Kourtney Kardashian joined her sister Kim on the red carpet for the 2009 Emmy awards. Kourtney, who is seven months pregnant with her first child, wore a strapless BCBG dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Super Gems jewels.

Get the Look: Christina Applegate at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Samantha Who's Christina Applegate looked absolutely gorgeous on the red carpet this evening and we have makeup artist Joanna Schlip for Clarins to thank for that! Joanna was inspired by Christina’s dramatic, sweeping gown made by Basil Soda when creating her makeup look. The vintage-esque navy gown called for makeup that was simple yet still made a statement.

With her hair pulled back in a chic chignon, Joanna was able to play up Christina’s eyes with a sexy retro smolder, while keeping her skin fresh and lips softly pink. Like the dress, Christina’s makeup exuded a Brigitte Bardot 60’s cool, with a modern twist.

To create that radiant glow that Christina had, Joanna prepped her skin with three steps: First she cleansed with Clarins Water Comfort One Step Cleanser. She then applied Clarins Multi-Active Day moisturizer, followed by Clarins Beauty Flash Balm for smooth, hydrated, radiant skin.

Since Christina has naturally beautiful skin, Joanna kept her face mostly bare with a light wash of Clarins True Radiance Foundation. She fished with a dusting of Clarins Loose Powder in Translucent. On her cheeks, Joanna applied Clarins Instant Sun Light Shimmer Palette on the apples of her cheeks, sweeping up to the hairline for a natural but luminous flush. The shimmering highlighter reflected the California sunlight on the red carpet, giving a healthy, peachy-pink glow.

The drama and sass of Christina's navy dress was reflected in her eye makeup. To give her that smoldering smokey eye, Joanna used the dark gray shade from Clarins Colour Quartet for Eyes in So Chic. To add definition and drama, she applied Clarins Eye Pencil in Black around the upper and lower lash line and inside the wet line, then finished with three coats of Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara in Black.

For a soft, modern pink mouth, Joanna applied Clarins Lip Definer in Bay Rose, and then added a hint of gloss with Clarins Colour Quench Lip Balm in Rose Pink.

Get the Look: Mary-Louise Parker at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Wearing a short, single strapped deep purple Zac Posen number at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Weeds leading lady Mary-Louis Parker looked quite radiant on the red carpet.

Makeup artist Tina Turnbow for Maybelline did Mary Louise's makeup and was inspired by the deep purple and indigo tones in her dress as well as the gorgeous gunmetal grey accessories she was sporting. To play up the colors in her dress, Tina brought out her best features with a dramatic yet classic smoky eye, blushing pink cheeks and nude lips.

Because Mary-Louise has beautiful porcelain skin, Tina kept her face looking pristine by applying Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse in Classic Ivory- with touches of Maybelline New York Dream Mousse Concealer in Light under the eyes and to the tops of the cheeks to give a contoured look. To compliment her ivory skin, Tina brushed on Maybelline New York Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in Gentle Pink to the apples of the cheeks to give the look of a soft natural flush.

On her eyes, Tina created a gorgeous opal-toned smoky eye using Maybelline New York Expert Wear Stylish Smokes in Amethyst Smokes. Tina used all four shades in the palette to play up her eyes and add drama; the deep purples complemented her creamy skin and dark hair. She then followed with Maybelline New York Line Stiletto Liquid Eyeliner in Black on the upper and lower lash lines. To showcase the gorgeous jewel tones of the shadows, Tina only applied one coat of Maybelline New York Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara in Very Black.

For a barely-there, neutral lip, Tina lined the entire mouth with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast. She then followed up with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Nearly There.

To complete the look, a soft dusting of Maybelline New York Mineral Power Illuminator in Nude was brushed along her collar bones, arms and legs for a red carpet glow.

Volcanic Ash...here I come!!

Estée Lauder Cos. to Close Prescriptives Brand

Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. has announced that by Jan. 31 they plan to shut down wholesale distribution of its 30-year-old Prescriptives brand.

Products will continue to be available on the website until supplies run out.

This appears to be the first time Lauder has closed a major long-standing business, and it is the first termination of a brand since Fabrizio Freda took the company’s reins as president and chief executive officer.

Without elaboration, the company stated:
“A core component of the Estée Lauder Companies’ corporate strategy is to evaluate, and where possible, turn around underperforming brands with the goal of improving return on investment. After a thorough analysis of the Prescriptives brand, management concluded that the brand’s long-term business model is no longer viable given the current market environment. We believe that the difficult decision relating to Prescriptives will allow us to redirect our resources to key strategic imperatives where we see the highest growth potential,” said Freda.

In other words, Prescriptives wasn't making them money.

NYFW S/S 2010: Dirty Girls at Narciso Rodriguez

The makeup behind Narciso Rodriguez can best be described as “Cool Sheik”, “Reverse Makeup”, “Dirty and Smudged”. Dick Page, Shiseido’s Artistic Director, created the look.

The models skin was left as pure as possible, using very light foundation where needed.

Dick first applied a makeup remover around the eyes with a fluffy brush to give a wet base and slightly glossy effect around the eyes. He then blended two shades of the Luminizing Satin Eye Colors from the Fall 2009 Collection, Squirrel (BR303) and Cavern (BR708). He applied the combination of shadows around the eyes (on top and bottom), right into the lashlines. He then used this color on the lids to create “dirty looking eyes.” No mascara or liner is used.

To create a matte lip, Dick blended two shades from the new Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte line from the Spring 2010 collection. Whisper (RD722) and Wink (BR323) were combined to create a flat mauve color, ultimately yielding “smudgy lips”.

NYFW S/S 2010: NARS Backstage at 3.1 Philip Lim

The theme behind 3.1 Phlip Lim was collage with inspiration from the works of Picasso and the Cubism period. The pieces look different from every angle leaving a sense of mystery to them, while remaining timeless. The same idea is applied to the makeup.

An abundance of different textures- matte, sheer, shimmer and shine- were portrayed differently as the model moved around. The clothes, like the makeup, were meant to stimulate the senses, be emotional, and also to sympathize with current times.

The look is clean and textural, giving a sense that makeup is there but not detectable from the plain eye.

“The idea is not to be harsh. The look is part sheer with shades of green, brown and lilac fading into each other” said lead artist Lisa Butler for NARS Cosmetics.

The key points include highlights of iridescence and gold to the cheekbones, light liner (almost invisible) and peach lips. “There is some shimmer so when the face moves around, the light really captures it. But there are no lines- no eye lines, no lip lines.”

Face:
  • Mix a small amount of NARS Concealer with NARS Hydrating Moisture Cream to apply just around the nose forehead and cheeks
  • Blend NARS Luxor Multiple (new for Holiday 2009) with a foundation brush to the cheekbone moving down diagonally toward the lips and adding a little bit onto the lips for subtle highlights
Eyes:
  • Apply the golden moss side of NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2010) all over the eye filling in the crease with the sienna side
  • Depending on skin tone, apply NARS Mousson Cream Eyesahdow (new for Holiday 2009) to adjust the color on the lid
  • Using a NARS Smudge Brush apply D.Gorgeous Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2010) to the lower lash line adding intensity as need be (“It’s not a heavy liner, but it shows some color,” explained Butler)
  • Apply one coat of NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara to the top lashes
Lips:
Add a swipe of NARS Cruising Lipstick (new for Spring 2010) and some NARS Luxor Multiple (new for Holiday 2009) to a NARS Retractable Lip Brush and dab lightly onto the lips starting in the middle and working your way out
Finish:
  • Apply NARS Orgasm Illuminator (new for Spring 2010) to the face, concentrating on the cheekbones
  • Reapply both shades from NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow to the brow bones

NYFW S/S 2010: Warrior Chic at Thakoon

The inspiration behind the collection came from the idea of “samurai-meets-surfer.” The collection consisted of so many sharp edges and aqua-blues that designer Thakoon wanted the girls to look like warriors so that they could really wear and carry the strong clothing.

For hair, Thakoon, hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, and Wella Professionals colorist Eva Scrivo collaborated for a finished style that demonstrates the contrast between tight and loose elements. A sleek, tight-to-the-head “seventh samurai” ponytail is sculpted on the top half, while leaving out loose, textured ends in a knot. Free-flowing, beachy waves left down in back, allows the look to exude a variety of contradictory elements that don’t blend, but balance. Colored extensions add dimension and life to help form the overall shape.

With such bright colors, the goal was to keep the face a bit more monotone overall but still to impart strength around the eyes and cheekbones. Diane Kndal for NARS Cosmetics was the lead makeup artist backstage. A very strong and luminous face is the key to getting this look right. “It’s a beach warrior look - surfer girl meets Seven Samurai," explained Kendal.

She used a minimal amount of makeup everywhere, but contoured the cheeks and kept the eye deeply set to convey an image of power through minimalism. Kendal used NARS' Sheer Matte Foundation to conceal imperfections and NARS Orgasm Illuminator (new for Spring 2010) to achieve luminosity to the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. The cheeks were contoured using NARS Malaysia Multiple Bronzer. Afterwards the cheekbones and nose were highlighted with the white side of NARS Hungry Heart Blush Duo.

On the eyes, the brown side of NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow was used on the entire eyelid up to the brows. Kendal blended both NARS D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow (new Spring 2010) as well as the light pink side of NARS Kuala Lumpur Duo Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2010) into the crease, outer eye and up towards the brow bone. NARS Bali Single Eyeshadow was applied to the upper and lower lash lines as well as to the crease in the eyelid, blending with the other shadows to create definition. Dust NARS Night Snow Single Eyeshadow in the corners of the eyes

The lips were dabbed wih NARS Concealer and with fingers, NARS Ophelia Lip Gloss (new for Spring 2010) was applied to the center of lips

NYFW S/S 2010: Reem Acra

Backstage at Reem Acra, makeup Artist Maxine Leonard led the Temptu Pro Team in creating a natural look to offset the collection’s extravagance of bright colors and heavily adorned jewelry.

The team used Temptu S/B Airbrush Foundation to achieve a clean, natural look on the skin, with Temptu S/B airbrush makeup in Champagne Shimmer and Blush to create a youthful flush and drama.

NYFW S/S 2010: TEMPTU Creates Youthful Beauty at Lorick

For Lorick's Spring/Summer 2010 presentation, there were three different acts and a different makeup look for each. Temptu lead makeup artist, JP McCary, created unique palettes to complement this youthful line. As each set of models took the stage wearing bright prints and colors, these “watercolor, pastel, and acrylic”-inspired themes were translated through the makeup.

Airbrushed champagne shimmer on cheekbones and temples created contour and drama, while accents such as teal and black eyeliners set the stage for the individual looks. A common ingredient in all three beauty presentations was the Champagne Highlighter which McCary applied using the Temptu AIRbrush Makeup System and AIR Pod Highlighter in Champagne to complete each look

NYFW S/S 2010: Woodstock Taking Over at Vivienne Tam

Vivienne Tam’s Spring 2010 runway show highlighted the beauty of nature with warm pastel colors, flowing dresses and delicate fabrics. Kevin Mancuso, Nexxus Salon Hair Care Creative Director, was the lead hairstylist backstage. For Tam's runway show, he created a chic, yet totally wearable look, that was inspired by the natural glamour of the 70’s and free-spirited Woodstock generation. The look was characterized by its' free-formed waves and voluminous silhouette.

To prep the hair, distribute a lightweight, curl enhancing foam, like Nexxus Gorgeous Curls, throughout hair to add body and enhance natural curls and waves. This also helps support the structure of the style. Next, flip hair upside down and blow dry, while running fingers through hair to create texture.

Once dry, flip hair back and create a center part. Use fingers to smooth and flatten the crown of the hair. Hair should be smooth for 1-2 inches from the root, and then billow out with volume from the forehead down. Take 1-inch sections of the hair and use a large barrel curling iron to create big, loose waves throughout the bottom half and underneath the hair. To curl the top half, use a small barrel curling iron.

To finish off the look, use a wide tooth comb or brush to brush out the curls. Lift the hair up and away from the root as you’re brushing to maximize the volume. Finish look with another spray of Nexxus Comb Thru to keep style looking runway-ready all day long.

Spotted: Be & D on the set of Gossip Girl

Now that everyone's favorite show is back, it is time for us to watch, study, and copy the stylish girls of the Upper East Side. In Monday's episode of Gossip Girl, Nate's rumored new love interest Bree (Joanna Garcia) is carrying Be & D's Cosette Satchel in Navy ($895 available at www.beandd.com; select Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue).
The bag also make an appearance later on this season in a future episode, where Serena (Blake Lively) is seen carrying the same Be & D Cosette satchel in Green Python ($1490 exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue).
Will S carry the bag off screen as well as on? Who is Bree anyway? Is B really wearing flip flops in the picture above?? And most importantly, how can I get MY hands on a Be & D Cosette satchel??? So many questions...

You know you love me, xoxo

NYFW S/S 2010: Going Wild Backstage at Hervé Léger

The fast paced energy backstage was the perfect setting for the wild looks being created to strut the catwalk at Hervé Léger.

Lisa Butler for MAC created looks that she described as "wild" and "wooly" with an "animal-like" feel. The Hervé Léger girl this season isn't too girly ("not too polite"). Butler used two different MAC Cream Color Bases to create a look that was a bit sunburned- a look like she's been out on the beach all day. The girls' faces were given a satin finish with bits of concealer added in to even out the skin tone. For the eyes, they were lined with a soft brown pencil to add a little bit of intensity and the brows were brushed upward with clear mascara, then filled in with an eyebrow pencil in Costa Rica. Lips were pale pink color that really popped a bit against the model's bronzed skin.
Recine working on a model

Bob Recine, who styled hair for Phyto, created a ”collage of texture” by giving the models hair that was either curled, braided and crimped. "I think of a patchwork quilt," said Recine. And like a quilt it was the combination of the different textures that, when put together, created something beautiful and wild at the same time. The star products backstage were Phytolaque hair spray, Phyto Pro, for volume, and Phytopolléine elixir for a "glassy finish."

CND nail tech, Angie Wingle, explained that the nails really worked into the story of the collection and the makeup. The color is Putty, a neutral hue they seemed to have been using a lot this season on the runway. Putty is part of CND's Colour Effects Collection (remember when I told you about that, read it here). Putty is a warm semi sheer color that's ideal for any skin tone. One coat gives a semi sheer look but it is quite buildable. As a sand blasted neutral, it went well with bronzed and sunburned colors used on the face giving off a kind of weathered look. Wingle used Sticky base coat, one to two layers of Putty and Air Dry top coat. To top it all off, she used CND's SolarSpeed Spray to make the nails dry faster.

Get the Look: Lauren Conrad at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

Former Hills star, Lauren Conrad, attended Sunday night's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards looking quite stunning. Celebrity makeup artist Amy Nadine explains how to get Lauren’s gorgeous red carpet look.

Eyes:
“Lauren wore a beautiful black and cream Diane von Furstenberg dress, so we decided the inspiration for her look would be 'smoldering sophistication'," says Nadine. "Lauren wanted a statement eye so we started by lining her eyes with mark Get in Line Hook Up Waterproof Eyeliner in Painted Black with a sweep of mark I-mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Corset on top and smudged outward with an eyeliner brush.”

Face
“I started by applying mark Speedway Do Everything in Natural and then dusted her face with mark Matte-nificent Oil Absorbing Powder in Natural/Buff. To further highlight and draw focus to her eyes, I used mark Get Bright Hook Up Highlighter in Light/Medium under her eyes and above her cheekbones. To give her that summer glow, I finished by dusting mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Cameo Glo and mark Bronze Pro Bronzing Powder to her cheeks.”

Lips
“I finished Lauren’s look by applying mark Dew Drenched Moisturlicious Lip Color in Skinny Dip to her lips.”

NYFW S/S 2010: Sebastian Professional at Diego Binetti

For Diego Binetti's Spring 2010 runway show, Thomas Dunkin led the Sebastian Professional stylist design team creating a modern, textured twist on structured braids, echoing the unique individualism and carefree youth inspiration in Diego Binetti's S/S 2010 collection.

To develop the imperfectly perfect Grecian-inspired updo, Dunkin adds a touch of disarray to structured braids for a modern twist. The asymmetrical pattern and haphazard positioning of the braids represents unique individualism and carefree youth.
  • Apply Sebastian Professional Thickefy Foam to damp hair; blend evenly throughout

  • Blow hair out straight with a medium to large-sized round brush, spray hair with flexible hairspray for added texture; section hair, and set with large velcro rollers

  • Take out pins, apply Sebastian Professional Microweb Fiber to hair, focusing most of the distribution towards the top of the head for lift and malleable texture. Clip top half of hair aside.

  • French braid bottom half of hair starting behind left ear. Pull down top half of hair and pin pieces into french braid updo for playful positioning. Finish look with Sebastian Professional Shine Define for shiny finish and lasting hold.
