Spaceships in my Back Yard...Chanel in Central Park

Yes you read correctly. Chanel will be in Central Park. Just not for sale.

This Mobile Art exhibit is one of Karl Lagerfeld's many projects with my fave brand of all time Chanel. Mobile Art is a traveling international exhibition showcased in a futuristic structure/container designed by Pritzker Prize-winning, London-based architect Zaha Hadid.

In other words it's a huge Star Trek-like thingie that'll be smack dab in the middle of Central Park.

In it will be the works of 15 contemporary artists (this is graet for me as in my quest to become more "cultured" I'm trying to get into art). Each artist was asked to create a piece that was in some way, shape, or form inspired by Chanel’s classic 2.55 quilted-style chain handbag (if you don't know this bag...shame on YOU!) And in case you didn't know, this bag is called the 2.55 because it was first issued in February 1955 (who said you don't learn anything from the internet).

This sucker has been to Hong Kong, Tokyo and is coming to New York, London, Moscow, and finally Paris in 2010 (the year I graduate college! I'm sensing a graduation trip!).

From what I gather, here are some facts:

-It's a
7,500-square-foot doughnut-shape structure, designed using computer software, and has a central courtyard.

-
Skylights admit natural light, and computer-generated lighting casts a rainbow of colors around the base of the exterior that glows day and night.

-Visitors entering the pavilion will be given MP3 players. On a track created by the sound artist Stephan Crasneanscki they will hear the French actress Jeanne Moreau discussing everything from sex and love to the secrets at the bottom of a woman’s handbag."

à la The New York Times.

This event will be FREE but it's suggested that visitors book timed tickets online (avoid lines I guess??) at chanel-mobileart.com and will be at Rumsey Playfield, midpark at 70th Street, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 9. I've tried this site and all that comes up is this really cool video but no booking place- it does say "SOON NEW YORK" on it so I'm assuming sometimes soon (ha).

Hope to see you there!

Michelle Obama wearing Thakoon

Ok for a while now I have been enamored by Michelle Obama. Not only is she an inspirational Black woman, wife, and mother...that girl can dress!! I have been following her style like I've been following this campaign. Some have even called her the next Jackie O.

Michelle O.

Sounds perfect.

Pic from FabSugar

But seriously...how gorgeous does she look in this Thakoon number. She is just the epitome of awesome chic!

I love this woman.

I also love Thakoon. And I know you do too.

But don't worry, come December you too can afford Thakoon on your student budget. How you ask me?

Tar-jayyy

Of course the wonder known as Thakoon Panichgul will be launching a GO! International line for mass retailer Target!

But being the fashionista you are, you already knew that ;-)

#1: If you wear pajama pants to work, you have no one to blame but yourself when you “accidentally” fall asleep in the conference room.

FREE YSL TOTE!!!!

No...you are not hallucinating!

Look what I found in today's WWD:

"EXTRA EXTRA: This is not a typo: Yves Saint Laurent will be handing out thousands of free bags come Sept. 6. The limited edition cotton totes, designed by Stefano Pilati, are the latest wrinkle in the French house’s ongoing “Manifesto” program, in which newspaper-style catalogues are handed out to women on the streets of key fashion cities. More than half a million copies of the catalogue will be distributed in Paris, New York, London, Milan, Tokyo and Hong Kong, with 5,000 in each city tucked into the black or white totes. Emphasizing YSL’s ready-to-wear, this season’s Manifesto features Naomi Campbell in fall-winter designs, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. — Miles Socha"

Do you know what that means??? That means that your resident fashion/beauty blogger will be walking the streets of Manhattan on the 6th in search of this bag! If you are in the New York City area for Fashion Week, this is one of those times to grab any and every catalogs being handed out along 42nd street!

Every Fashion Week, there are TONS of sponsors standing outside the tents with catalogs, free juices, after parties-basically any product that they are trying to launch. You won't believe how much stuff I've gotten just for walking by the tents (ok I'm not that pathetic I have a reason for being near the tents...it's on my way to the train station....OK, I definitely hang out in front gasping at the editors).

Possible places where they might be handing these out:

-Outside the Tents, along 42nd and 6th ave

-Outside 4 Times Square (which is the Condé Nast Building, Condé Nast being home of Vogue, W, Allure, etc.), 42nd and Broadway

These are the two places I can think of because I have gotten a YSL catalog last Fashion Week while walking past the Condé Nast building and like I stated earlier...everything is handed out in front of the tents. Pretty much anywhere within the vicinity of the tents.

Don't worry ya'll..I'll be on the lookout for these totes. Believe me!

Product Review: Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect

Jeez, I feel like I haven't done one of these in AGES...my bad ya'll!

So in case you've forgotten (haha) this is where I review my faves (and not so fave) lip glosses/lipsticks/lip products.

Today under the spotlight is Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in Fuchsia Poplin 577.
above: Fuschia Poplin

Ok so I've always heard about this gloss but it wasn't up until I saw my co-worker with this perfect shade of pink that I ventured out and tried it.

**I have this major obsession with pink lippies...pink is my red***

via Sephora:

What it is:
An ultra-shimmering reformulation of Dior's cult-favorite, Dior Addict lip gloss.

What it is formulated to do:
Lips go high-tech with shimmering, multi-dimensional reflective pigments that deliver mega-watt shine and color that lasts for hours. The innovative, "water-like" formula goes on smooth and fast with a silky brush applicator that keeps you in perfect control.

What I think:

OHMIGOD!!! This is perfect or girls who want a gloss that doesn't stick to you like MAC lipglass. It's definitely not as thick as my L'Oreal Infallible, which in a way is good because my Infallible can get a bit annoying because of the stick factor. This gloss, however, goes on smooth (I'm assuming because of the "water-like formula"..) and it does not lie about the shine. This gloss is moisturizing and soft

What I don't like is the glitter. I could do without glitter. My lips are already big (some say full...I say big. You say potato...I say poh-tah-toe..haha) I feel that the glitter just adds extra-ness. It's not full on chunks of glitter it's more of a shimmer but again...extraness. I am strictly no glitter kinda gal. It would make a good going out at night gloss because than I feel I need that extra POW..but for everyday application it's a bit much especially for the pink color. Maybe if I tried a different color (something a little less vibrant..a caramel color maybe...) it would have been great. The pink is a berry pink and is nothing like a Barbie pink (which is what I'm looking for). The color is a bit toned down from the Sephora swatch above but keep in mind that I am dark skinned and my lips are two toned (unfortunately, my top lip is darker so often at times colors change on me).

Verdict: This gloss is amazing in my book in terms of consistency and I like the fact that it's not too thick yet it isn't watery and runny. If you don't mind a bit of a shimmer than by all means...enjoy because the shimmer doesn't hit you in the face (in other words there's no Bonnebell, Smackers effect) but if you're anti shimmer I suggest you just go with the Dior Addict Plastic Gloss (available at Nordstrom). It has the same texture and everything minus shimmer.

Rating: B+

Have you tried it? Like it? Love it? Am I crazy/buggin?

Comme des Garcons for H&M;

So who else loves H&M?
(raises hands)

But I have been leaving H&M simply because everybody and they mother shop there. It's tough because I love going there and seeing all of the affordable chic clothes but then when you leave the store you see someone wearing what you either wanted to buy or just bought.

sucks...

But there is one thing that I do love about stores that are ridiculously affordable...they capture the attention of major fashion designers. Look at Target and there widely successful Go International collections- Richard Chai, Libertines, Proenza Schouler- these are BIG names and the pieces are often too cute for words and my debit card seems to find its way out of my wallet and into the hands of the cashiers.

Well H&M has reeled me back into the store...well at least in November they will. Like the Roberto Cavalli for H&M, major fashion house Comme des Garçons will be doing a capsule collection at an affordable price.

If you've been reading this blog from the getgo, you'll know that I just adore Rei Kawakubo (designer behind Comme). Her style is so much more different than these mainstream fashion houses. Rei is not afraid of black and makes you more aware of the beauty that comes from such a color. Normally, I reserve black for somber events: wakes, funerals, job interviews (those tend to be very depressing for me). But with Rei's clothing the clothes don't disappoint one bit. Very avant garde and sometimes architectural, her collections seem (in my opinion) almost couture like.

So having her do a collection for H&M will have me in H&M on opening day.

(pictured: deconstructed jackets, cropped pants, and a ruffled coatdress)

This is going to be interesting as not many people know or have heard of Comme des Garçons, unless they're really into fashion. But Rei is a fashion indie...she does what she wants and unlike Roberto Cavalli, she doesn't have that mainstream appeal so I'd love to see how this collection does.

Panic mode major!!!!!

Ok so as I write this I sit nearly in tears. Someone somewhere is aying a MAJORLY unfunny trick on me. It seems that all, yes ALL, of my black eyeliners are missing. Gone, MIA, not in my possesion!

Where could they have gone, I don't know. I have this crazy obsession with black eyeliner...its all I love (how can you not??) The only liners I seem to find are my brown and teal from Wet N Wild.

My three (3!) black ones from Wet n Wild, my Cover Girl, Max Factor...all gone.

Vanished into the Land of Lost Makeup.

If this is my brother playing a trick on me...he's a dead man.

Till then...enjoy

Back To School Wishes Pt. 1

Ok so I officially start classes on Monday.

YIKES!

As much as I hate college, I'm not going to lie...going back is kind of okay only because I'm excited at what the year will bring. I'm going on to my third year (though I remember orientation like it was yesterday) and am part of a great organization which will allow me to use my PR "skills" to test.

The best part though...back to school shopping!
.
.
.
.
.
.
But I'm broke. So right now I present to you what I would have gotten if I had money...haha

Since I commute to school and don't live on/ near campus, I need a bag that can keep up. And by keep up I mean it must be able to carry my books, wallet, makeup (yes you read correctly...makeup), water/food, my planner (I'm old school and write down everything even though I have a Blackberry), and what other crap I pick up throughout the day (I've been known to go shopping at my campus bookstore lol).

This Juicy Couture Canvas Tote looks like it can work wonders, especially since the site boasts "Fit: Extra-large: Holds at least a magazine, water bottle, full-size wallet and sweater. Dimensions: 19"W x 16"H x 4"D." $95

Like I said, I commute. That means I need shoes that won't fall apart on me. I'd love to be one of those college girls that wear cute heels and the like but when you're running across Grand Central Terminal for a train leaving in exactly 1 minute, you need shoes that can help, not hurt, you. But that doesn't mean I'm living in my New Balances. Oh no.

I'd get these babies in not time flat (haha) if I had $200. Cole Haan's "Air Sierra" patent leather ballet flat (left) has a wonderful round toe (I hate pointy shoes) and has Nike Air® that cushions the foot for long-lasting comfort. Juicy Couture's Maxwell flat (right) is just too beautiful to pass up-patent leather and rubber sole for comfort.

The bag and the shoes are the NUMBER ONE essential in my opinion. I could wear clothes from last year but my bag and shoes have to be updated.

So look out for Part 2 of my Back To School post for the perfect jeans, dresses, and my new trend (which I'll keep secret)

=)

But don't get it twisted

...though I'm lovin' Michael Phelps right now...the guy who I've got my eyes on

is this fine brotha from Jamaica..Usain Bolt.

one word: YUM!

I don't know if it's 'cuz he reminds me of my ex (also Jamaican...I love West Indian men...I have a thing for accents) or if it's cuz he runs track (I'm a former track runner except I definitely was NOT a sprinter...long distance for me baby)

or if it's simply because he's gorgeous...

He won 3 gold medals in one week and broke records while doing it. Simply wonderful!

I'm in love...Tall (6'4"ish) Dark and Handsome for real

So no this ain't no fashion post, nor does it have anything to do with beauty...actually I take that back...this ladies is the beauty of MAN. Sometimes life is just beyond MAC and Manolo's...it's

MAC, Manolo's, and Men...my new thang hahahahaha

Michael Phelps...Obsessed

It's official...I am QUITE obsessed with swimming phenom Michael Phelps. It all started in 2003 as I watched Phelps spank Thorpe in the 400 I.M. He was 18 and I was 15 (...16 I don't know) and he made me love swimming all over again (I was quasi obsessed when Amanda Beard was around in 200 but then I stopped caring lol).

And then there was Athens, where Phelps wowed me.

And now...Beijing.

His body is sick (I'm convinced I'm going to marry a swimmer or someone with the body of a swimmer...or just like Phelps' body... haha): tall, slim build but definitely in shape. I'm 5'9" and quite frankly the guys here in NYC are, like, 5'7" and under (wtf??) so someone who stands at 6'4"- I'm sold---and those abs...drool-worthy.

But other than his outrageously gorgeous abs, super cute smile, and wonderous height: he's frikkin amazing! I love guys who are passionate about what they do (albeit sports, school, whatever...as long as it's productive...). And um...it's quite obvious how passionate he is...here he is winning the 4x100 relay

And so I share:
Sadly I have this poster rolled up in a tube (that along with my gazillion Audrey Hepburn and Josephine Baker posters). I'm too afraid to put it up for who knows what reason. It's okay 'cuz I have this one hung up:
Body= sick/crazy/so frikkin gorgeous!!!!!!

That's as obsessive I've gotten- so no my room isn't covered in Phelps memorabilia (think AT&T's "Phelps Phan" commercial...yeah, I haven't gotten that bad). But I have been up 'till 4am every morning and have never, and I mean NEVER missed one of his races at these Olympics...

never

It also helps that he and I like the same music:

"I'm a huge fan of rap music, " the swimming champ told OK!. "Before a race, I usually listened to Biggie, Jay-Z, DMX or 50 Cent."

Biggie AND Jay Z??? Brooklyn legends right there lol and Brooklyn is my hometown (well..home city, we're not exactly a town over here)

And homeboy was in the April issue of US Vogue next to model Caroline Trentini
(side note: it's been rumored that he's dated or is dating model Lily Donaldson-I don't know which-...just thought I'd share and try to make this post somewhat fashion related haha)

Don't know him??

You're welcome

I Love Starbucks' Marketing Team...

No seriously I do. In May they managed to get me to venture out to Bryant Park early in the morning simply by sending me an email. What happened when I got there, well I learned about there new coffee (Pike Place). All by sending me an email...for a coffee.

But today they got me again. How??

Well if you visit Starbucks in the morning and keep your receipt...you can come back after 2pm and get any iced grande beverage - GRANDE- for $2 in the afternoon.

And yeah, frappuccino's included!!!

Now I know I'm addicted to my Mocha Frap and Double Chocolate Chip Frap (both no whip, please) so this is just music to my ears!!

I know this isn't fashion or beauty related but I felt I had to share. After all, ya'll my peoples..haha. Plus I know some of ya'll can get rowdy without your morning -and afternoon- coffee. So You're Welcome!

Kate Hudon on the September cover of W Magazine

So piggybacking off of my dark Lips post I just had to post a picture of my girl Kate Hudson rockin' the dark lip look on the cover of W Magazine's September issue. I always love W for their covers. They're not as mainstream as other mags and their covers are almost always breathtaking.

This isn't the Kate I'm used to seeing. I fell in love with her in the movie How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days (how can you not after she sang "You're So Vain") but this Kate is much darker and edgier.

I like this look.

What do you think? Yay? Nay? Eww? Don't care? Don't know who she is?

Fall Trend: Vamp Lips

So gearing up for Fall already, I'm trying to think (and budget) what makeup I'll be needing for the upcoming fall season. My Sephora catalog came in the mail and one of the trends mentioned was the dark vampy lip color.

At Yves Saint Laurent
Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons
I'm on the fence about dark lips. Worn too dark and you look like you're getting ready for some Halloween gala. I would certainly NOT go as dark as YSL. That on dark skin is just a no-no.

And that's where my problem lies. I have dark skin and dark lips as well so anything too dark makes me seem goth. And my goth days are over (7th grade...went through a phase)

But I am not one to be limited. I went to Sephora to try and find something that would work wonders on me.

After seeing all of the ads, I had to check out the collection myself. Smashbox does not disappoint with their Wicked collection. I personally love Wicked Lovely Lip Gloss in Sultry. The color is not harsh on my lips at all!! It's actually quite sheer and I kind of had to layer it on (not alot but one swipe did not do it).

Givenchy's Rouge Interdit Satin Lipstick in Black Plum and Flirting Brown both do a great job for camp lips but on me Black Plum is the better option, not as harsh as Flirting Brown.
Flirting Brown

Black Plum

In the end, all of these are too rich for my pockets so I did what any broke beauty addict would/should do...drugstore brands. When in doubt, CoverGirl! I have one lipstick from the TruShine Collection (in Chocolate Shine) and love how the color lasts so I decided to get a new one in Cherry Shine which turned out fab on me. It's not that as dark as some of the previous lippies mentioned but it's much darker than anything I'd normally buy.

baby steps..lol

I do suggest you line your lips with an anti-feathering lip pencil (I suggest Too Faced Borderline Lip Pencil). If your rockin' dark lips, your lips have to be on point! Nothing's uglier than peeling dark red lips. Hell, nothing's worse than dry cracked lips...period. So exfoliate exfoliate exfoliate...

"So now it's the million pounds of pigment question: Are dark lips a yes or a no? Would you wear this? And if so, how dramatic would you make it? And if not, why not?"

Something wicked this way comes: Jourdan Dunn for September 2008 i-D issue

The September issue of i-D mag features our new starlet Jourdan Dunn. Jourdan is definitely making a name for herself in the fashion biz. Not only was she one of the lucky ladies to have a cover for the Vogue Italia All Black Issue, but she has been booking jobs crazy.

Hopefully this isn't a fluke or something. Often fellow black model Chanel Iman gets all of the attention but I think Jourdan is just as stunning and could possibly (if given the opportunity) have her career last as long as Naomi's.

i-D is known to have stunning editorials and this issue is known as "The To Die For Issue" and Jourdan is seriously to die for.

enjoy!

Get the Look: Selita Ebanks

So piggybacking off of my last post of Selita Ebanks I couldn't help but love this outfit she had. I definitely want to copy it but my life is too boring and I'll have nowhere to wear it.

But if you want to get the look for less, I can help. I mean that's what I'm here for, non???

Blazer: American Eagle $70

Mini Skirt: American Apparel: $25
Tee Shirt: American Apparel: $22 (leave untucked)

Shoes: Candice by Bakers Shoes $65

Clutch: Quilted 21 Wallet from Forever 21 $8.80

Necklace: Polished Flower Necklace w/ Pearl by Forever 21 $4.80

TA-DA!

Now go and make me proud!!

What ya think...like it, love it, eww hate it!???

Why did Selita Ebanks do this???

Selita Ebanks cut her hair off.

Why?!?!?!?!

I know the bob and short hair is "in" now but seriously girl...whyyy? I love her hair long and when I met..ok drooled over...her I was fascinated by the beauty that is Selita. And I know sweetheart was probably sporting a weave but...damn.

I'm gonna miss seeing a sister with long hair at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show, showing them blondes how we do. But then again the hair stylists would probably put weave on her anyways.

Aubrey O'Day's Clothing line

I don't know if you remember, but I had previously told you guys about Aubrey O'Day (member of P. Diddy super group Danit Kane) will be launching her own clothing line. Well, the time has come.

Wearing your Heart on your Sleeve is the newest fashion. Literally.

People always told Aubrey that she wore her heart on her sleeve. After hearing this so many times, she was eventually drawn to create a clothing line based around the concept.

The ultra cool t-shirts, hoodies, and boy-briefs are of premium quality, printed exclusively on American Apparel clothing. And the phrases on the shirts reflect real life experiences and are implemented into simple, however elegant t-shirt designs.

Heart On My Sleeve, a phrase originated by William Shakespeare, has been in use for hundreds of years. But, in this new day and age of pop culture, Heart On My Sleeve is not simply a phrase, it's a statement....

That ladies and gents (if you're out there) is directly from her site. Now this is a bit odd as Aubrey is ALWAYS being criticized about her fashion choices. I personally love the girl and think there are tons of haters but no matter what she wear people are always getting at her either for her clothes, hair, and makeup (always makeup). But then again, it can't be hard designing tee shirts.

The T Shirts are cute and moderately priced ($18-24) but what I don't get is that the guys have the same shirts and it's just kind of doesn't make sense because some of the shirts have fairies on them talking about fairy tales and all that. The briefs made no sense and got me upset so I'm not posting pics.

This bag is cute but quite honestly I wouldn't buy it at $35...you could go to Victoria's Secret and buy a bag from the PINK line which are all super cute an cheaper.

This was a smart idea for her. I've always seen Aubrey wearing these braided headbands and I personally love it and have commented about it before here. So selling them was a smart move on her part because fans like me would totally buy it. But the dumb part was selling them for $45. Seriously?? $45? I'm sorry but Forever 21 would probably have something similar and if push came to shove I'd take shoelaces/yarn/thread and braid them and make my own headbands.

I'm not trying to knock Aubrey down and knowing me I would buy the T shirts and maybe the bag if my money was right. But some things just don't fit.

I'm really not feelin' the "I Love MEn" shirt for guys....not one bit.

PS: did we catch how her models were America's Next Top Model winners (my two faves- CariDee and Jaslene). I think I like this simply because of the name of the clothing line..cuz I do wear MY heart on my sleeves.

See for yourself at by visiting the site: Heart on my Sleeve
