To Matte or Not to Matte??

Monday, June 14, 2010

that is the question…

While rummaging through my piles and piles of stuff, mainly packages I’m too lazy to open and sift through, I discovered a tiny pouch stuffed with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics beauty products. These, no doubt, came from The Makeup Show and the beauty girl in me got beyond excited at the thought of new and unused makeup.

The product before me was OCC’s “Flatline” Nail Lacquer ($8), a clear, matte top coat. Only, I wish I knew it were matte before applying it, furiously patting my fingernails to see where the heck the product went, and subsequently getting fingerprints all over my freshly done nails.

Now I wasn’t a big fan of this whole matte nail trend that was going around and decided that it was not for me. I’m a glossy kinda gal. Flatline is a great polish with a brush that distributes evenly across the nail with nary a streak. While the brush is a bit long for my liking, it did not get in the way of application. Grayish in the bottle, it goes on crystal clear so one doesn’t have to worry about it leaving a tint or anything like that. Once the polish is on the nail, I can only describe it as “gummy” since it is super tacky on the nail and WILL wipe off with one accidental swipe. It dries fast, and by fast I mean within two minutes, BUT it smells horrendous.

You win some, you lose some.

It sure as hell does what it says it does. My dark purple polish (OPI’s Sapphire in the Snow) went from shiny to super matte within seconds! I tried to give it a go, but ultimately decided that matte isn’t me.

If you are, however, into the whole matte trend or only want to dip your fingers in it a bit (in other words, you don’t want to go out and buy a matte colored polish) I say definitely get this since it can turn any polish into a matte one. This would be fun to just play around with and maybe if I applied it over a different color I can get into it. But for now, the answer is to not.

Flatline and other OCC nail lacquers are available on www.occmakeup.com.

Behind the Scenes at The Makeup Show NYC

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Yesterday, myself and a couple of other fab beauty bloggers had the honor and pleasure of getting the behind the scenes look at The Makeup Show NYC presented by The Powder Group and Metropolitan Pavilion.

The Makeup Show NYC officially starts today (May 17) and goes until tomorrow (May 18) and brings the beauty industry together like no other trade event. I’ve posted about it before and to see what goes on before the actual day of was pretty exciting.

The event started with an intro by The Powder Group founder Michael DeVellis (which I missed…sad face…stupid NYC transit) but I came just in time to listen to makeup artist super genius James Vincent and receive a walk through of the venue. While walking through the entire space, James introduced us to many of the participating brands.

In attendance were, of course, some of my all time favorite brands…Becca Cosmetics, Stila (holla…they’re back!!), MAC, Make Up For Ever and Mario Badescu (check out my life changing experience with Mario Badescu skincare).

Stila’s Summer 2009 Collection (Indian Summer)…includes 24 Karat Gold!!!

There were also brands that I’ve heard of due to my late night YouTube obsession including Mehron and Kryolan- two brands that YouTube fave xsparkage have used in the past.

But, I was also introduced to some new brands that I just can’t wait to get my hands on- I’m talking to you Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics!!! Apparently their Lip Tar is grabbing major attention and ya’ll know, where there’s a lipgloss, there’s MissWhoever You Are! (hmm…catchy…that should be my new slogan..haha)

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Lip Tar…sorry for the blurryness

Pigments from Naked Cosmetics…another brand I’m dying after!

I also got to meet some of my absolute favorite bloggers- Brit from Clumps of Mascara and Kia from Yummy 411. These girls are, like, major so I was super excited (kinda nervous) to meet them in “real” life.

The Makeup Show is a must-attend event for anyone involved in the makeup industry. It’s two whole days of inspiration, education and community building. Tickets are still available at the door:
One Day Ticket $65 - Tax is not included
Two Day Ticket $85 - Tax is not included

The Makeup Show New York 2009
