Everyday makeup

Thursday, October 17, 2013

After an eye irritation left me panicked at the possible cause, I’ve been taking it easy on my daily makeup routine. Not only did I start wearing a new foundation, I used a new face brush AND mascara in the same week leaving me unable to identify the cause of said irritated eye. As a result I’ve been keeping the focus on my lips, playing with different colors outside of my usual bright red or popping pink.

The result is this unbelievably gorgeous orange combination consisting of one of NARS’ newest products and a new to me lipgloss from NYX.

Part of the Guy Bourdin collection (available now), Short Circuit is a pretty coral that glides on lips and can build up for super intense pigment. Though it doesn’t apply one even coat with one swipe (I find that two applications gets a more even look), it certainly makes orange a more wearable color. Not as bright as MAC’s Morange (the ultimate orange in my book) this is less in your face and wayyyyy creamier. I got a solid two to three hours of wear before I felt the need to reapply.

When that time does come to reapply, I’ve been using NYX Butter Gloss in Orach Cobbler. It provides a sheer wash of color on my lips that complements rather than overpower. It’s non-tacky, has a faint candy scent, and does the job. It isn’t an intensely pigmented lip color say, like MAC’s Lipglass, but is a decent lipgloss especially considering the under $5 price tag.

Outside of these two, I’ll apply a bit of powder to even out my face and blot throughout the day to control the oil. Easy, peasy daytime look!

Disclosure: NARS provided a sample for editorial consideration.

back to basics: brows

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

This entire summer I’ve been obsessed with three beauty related topics: brows, false lashes, and contouring As a result, I quickly learned that I can neither fill in my brows properly, contour without looking angry, and apply false lashes without gluing my eyes shut. More importantly, I’m not alone since many of you tweeted the you have issues as well.

Thus a new somewhat series is born on MissWYA. Lets call it “Back to Basics,” where I poll my industry insiders/ friends for their tips and tricks on how to master (or in my case, learn) how to do some of the most basic beauty related tasks. First up: brows.

brows done by Sarah Hutney

For brows, it sounds pretty easy but my biggest dilemma is my heavy hand. I tend to apply so much pressure that the filled in bit looks very much drawn in. It’s a lot less Brooke Shields and a bit more Groucho Marx. SO, I reached out to Arthur Boston, NARS National Makeup Stylist, who was able to provide the following:

Okay, no seriously, how do I fill in my brows?
“With a pencil or powder start underneath the brow and define the eye then, using a brow brush, brush the color up for a more natural brow look.”

Gel? Pencil? What’s a girl (or guy) to use?
“It completely depends on the brow; if you have a thicker brow it’s better to go with a gel like our new NARS Brow Gels, a thinner brow is more easily defined with a pencil like the new NARS Brow Perfectors.”

Isn’t black a bit harsh for brows a.k.a how to not make it look like you used eyeliner?
You would never use black on the brows, even a dark brow. The way to not make it look like you used eyeliner is to not actually use an eyeliner, use a brow pencil or powder (like an eye shadow) or gel to diffuse the color for a more realistic finish.

Adds makeup artist Sarah Hutney (who I met at a mark photo shoot recently - picture above!), “You want to start at the arch of your brow to add the most focus and definition there. From there you can swipe your brush towards the end of front of the brow.”

Sounds easy right? Shop my favorite brow products (affiliate links ahoy!):

wearing lately

Thursday, August 1, 2013

If I was the type of girl who wore the same exact makeup everyday this blog would cease to exist. That said, when I find something I love I obsess over it to the point where I force anyone within earshot to listen to me wax poetic about it. This time around, I figure I’d just write about it instead ;)

MAKE Soft Focus Foundation in Cool #8 ($32.50): I was first introduced to this foundation after an event a few months back and I knew I HAD to have it! It provides such a flawless coverage without feeling heavy or cakey when applied. It allows my skin to breath and it does a decent job holding up against my oily skin. Coverage is buildable so it’s a foundation I can wear year round, simply adding more in the cooler months when I tend to go for a heavier foundation. It leaves me looking airbrushed which is a win in my book.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterous Red ($25.00): NARS DONE DID IT AGAIN! There’s a sweet spot in my heart for NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils and it all started with Dragon Girl. I was convinced that Dragon Girl was the Gold Standard when it came to reds and nothing came close (okay maybe with the exception of this). Now Mysterious Red - a beautiful crimson red - has me wondering if I should buy in bulk or pray NARS changes their mind and makes this shade permanent. This glides on lips but it matte without drying lips. The wear is impeccable and it takes me from 8am to about 2pm at which point I’m left with a stain (I typically dab on a bit of gloss or remove completely to reapply since I hate glossy red lips). It is bright and bold while giving you LOTS of color in one swipe.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Endless ($9.00): My love for Rimmel mascaras is fairly new and I’m not turning back at all! I’ve been using and living by their Lash Accelerator (post here) for weeks but when I saw Lash Accelerator Endless I couldn’t walk away without grabbing it (right?!) The brand claims that it provides with up to 90% longer lashes instantly but I’m not sure I can quantify that. What I WILL say is that my lashes to look longer, don’t clump unless I start adding three coats, and has the illusion of being a bit thicker. The mascara doesn’t flake on me and looks the same at night as it did that morning. Get it. Don’t argue with me, just do as I say and thank me later.

Maybelline Fit Me Shine Free Foundation Stick in 340 ($9.00): Another summer foundation option! I’m not typically a stick foundation kind of gal since I’ve found them to be drying but this goes on like a gel but dries matte. It goes on smoothly and I buff it with a foundation brush to get a flawless look. It also works great as a concealer which I’ve been doing lately, applying it underneath my eyes (over the MAKE foundation).

And that’s my summer face. Quick and easy but still really beautiful.

nars blush & bronzer duos

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

I’m a great believer in beauty products that save time and clear up space in your makeup bag - not that I EVER have space because I’m also a great believer in packing for the what ifs in life. Like what if I get invited to a last minute dinner with Prince Harry and need to change up my makeup? OBVIOUSLY it requires me carrying a full bottle of foundation, eye shadows, five different lipsticks, two blushes, a highlighter, two concealers, and a set of brushes, right?

I’ll spare you the details of my excessive makeup bag and focus on something that is intended to making your life easier while providing a flush of color. Created exclusively for Sephora and available now are blush and bronzer duos from NARS that pairs Laguna Bronzer with one of four best-selling cheek shades (Desire, Oasis, Orgasm, and Deep Throat)

aren’t they pretty?

Pictured above are three of the four and I’m pretty sure we all know which one I’m in love with. It’s a suprise to absolutely no one that the Desire / Laguna combo is my clear favorite. Desire is one of my many favorite blushes by NARS as it’s a bright pink blush that leaves a slight baby doll flush on my brown skin.

Deep Throat (sheer pink) and Oasis (pinky champagne) round out the two above with the fourth duo consisting of the cult classic Orgasm.

The duos are available at Sephora for $41 (cheaper than buying them separately).

Disclosure: I received samples from the brand.

new from nars this summer

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

summer makeup releases make me a very happy girl (let’s be honest, any product release makes me happy but just let me rock). NARS has been #killingit lately and so it’s zero surprise that their latest products are those you need to own ASAP.

Or at least when they become available…

Fashion Rebel eyeshadow duo and Madness nail polish (gifted)

The summer color (available April 15) is not for those who fear bright hues because it is chock full of ‘em! Fashion Rebel eyeshadow duo actually reminds me of something the women of Real Housewives of Atlanta or Married 2 Medicine would wear (let’s blame too many Sunday nights wasted). The colors have a matte texture and it takes quite a bit to add some serious punch. They are pretty sheer, with the light yellow being the absolute lightest. You have to really pack it on to get an intense look. The purple shade was easier to work with on its own and looks great on darker skin. I lightly spritzed my brush with water to pick up the color and just continued to apply to get my desired look.

Madness nail polish is gorgeous. It’s the perfect summer color and I cannot wait to wear this bright orange paired with cute summer sandals.

Pierre Hardy for NARS Collection

Boys Don’t Cry blush

News of this collaboration just hit my inbox this morning and I’m already setting some moolah aside. Inspired by Hardy’s Summer 2013 shoe collection, this NARS collection has two blush shades featuring Hardy’s signature cubic print like the one you see above. Short story: I need this in my life. I want to have it in my possession and stare at it all day. It’s described as a pink grepefruit shade and I can only imagine just how lively it’ll make one look.

The collection also has six nail polish duos, all packaged in a mini shoebox and dust bag (cute, right?!). All shades are limited edition and are available on May 1 at www.narscosmetics.com (with the exception of the “Venomous” nail polishes which is exclusive to the brand’s website and boutiques).
