In the print world, May magazines tend to be dubbed the “beauty issue” with pages upon pages of beauty advice, new products, tips, etc. It seems this year us beauty bloggers had our own reason to celebrate.
Earlier this month, I attended The Makeup Show to learn what’s new and learn from the pro’s. Now in its ninth year, TMS continues to be a platform for top beauty brands to launch their most coveted products (remember OCC Lip Tars??). Highlights include: Sephora Collection showcased their PRO makeup brush collection (perfect for makeup artists and consumers seeing that Sephora is a leader in terms of beauty retailers). OFRA’s Foundation Stick launched exclusively at the show this year in seven new shades and provides sheer-to-full coverage. Lauren Napier launched her new CLEANSE by LAUREN NAPIER facial cleansing wipes which allows you to cleanse on-the-go. Whether you take one or three, the wipes remain saturated and ready for use. Charlotte Tilbury debuted her collection (which arrives on US shores this fall!)
Kevyn Aucoin’s final makeup kit
This year, The Makeup Show paid homage to the legendary Kevyn Aucoin with the “The Makeup Show Icon Gallery.” The Makeup Show worked with Kevyn Aucoin Beauty to showcase never-before-seen pieces from Kevyn Aucoin’s life work, celebrating his dedication to the art of makeup. It was great seeing throwback images all while learning more about his career.
BEAUTYCON NYC
First panel of the day featuring Whitney Port, Fleur de Force, Kandee Johnson, Joe Zee, among others
From makeup professionals to YouTube beauty gurus, BeautyCon NYC was an eye opening event. As a marketer (day time gig), I’ve always understood the valuer of the beauty guru even when coworkers laughed or dismissed them as “little girls in their bedrooms” (<—actual thing someone said to me once). As a beauty consumer, I live on YouTube beauty tutorials and reviews because I see sometimes honest reviews from my peers about products I’m interested in buying. BeautyCon showed me just how influential these young content creators are (there wee lines just to meet the YouTubers and I even saw tears. Real. Tears).
Me and Carli Bybel - I actually love this girl. She’s gorgeous, so sweet and humble
BeautyCon is a fashion and beauty summit for the internet’s most influential beauty and fashion gurus and their ever-growing number of fans. Partnering with ELLE Magazine, the event hosted panel discussions (Rise of the Digital Influencer) and events (brand meet ups, makeup consultations with Bare Minerals, dance floor, etc.).

I couldn’t help but take a picture with Brett (Carli’s boo thang); who told me I’d find love and I nearly died because he’s like a baby and I felt old. Whatever…a gal needs an ego booster.
Overall it was interesting to hear what these content creators had to say. TL;DR
- Be yourself when creating videos online
- Confidence is key
- Screw the internet haters (there’s often something wrong with them and they’re projecting)
- So many young millenials want to be entrepreneurs and YouTube is allowing them to become just that
- Have patience (for example it’s been four-ish years since Whitney Port stopped being on reality TV but she’s still hanging in there regarding her clothing line)
- Reality TV isn’t reality, per Joe Zee (who left his post in print media at ELLE to go work in digital at Yahoo!)
Where there’s a photobooth, there’s Eileen. Also as if the photos above weren’t proof, I been drankin’
That’s been my month friends. Regularly scheduled blog posts will resume in June.
Disclosure: I attended both events gratis as press but all opinions are my own, etc. etc.
