Jessica Harlow: I’m just a girl who is obsessed with fashion and beauty that is determined to take over the world!
MissWYA: How long have you been doing YouTube videos?
JH: It’s been about 8 or 9 months since I uploaded my first actual tutorial to YouTube.
MissWYA: What got you started doing videos?
JH: A year before I made my channel, I had recorded a tutorial but never uploaded it because I didn’t feel ready. I don’t think I was even 18 yet. I’m a huge perfectionist and I constantly have to fight with myself to upload anything at all. At 18, I wasn’t ready to fight with myself yet!
A few months later I started college and so many girls would ask me questions about my makeup, my hair, my clothes, etc. and recommended that I start doing videos on YouTube. It was so odd because I never told anyone that I had ever even contemplated making videos on YouTube. Long story short, I saw it as a sign and took the plunge. It was kind of liberating because before YouTube, I hated being recorded on video!
MissWYA: When did you become interested in cosmetics and beauty products?
JH: When I was really young, I would sneak into my mom’s makeup and just play! Around 11, I had really terrible acne and I was embarrassed to go to school with zits all over my face when most of the other girls had really pretty skin. My best friend at the time also had really bad skin and I remember her telling me to use “cover-up”. And I did. Put it this way, two 11-year-olds putting on foundation and concealer is NEVER a pretty thing! We were made fun of all the time for it. Later on, both of our makeup collections grew far beyond cover-up – lipgloss, lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, blush…everything! Eventually, we too grew apart.
It wasn’t until I was 15 and saw “Party Monster” for the first time that I began to see makeup in a whole new light. It was no longer just something to hide what you don’t like and enhance what you do like – it was an art. Leave it to the drag queens to show you just how fun and fabulous sequins, glitter, and false lashes can be!
MissWYA: What are a few of your makeup obsessions right now?
JH: I feel like with all the focus being put on bold, edgy makeup – ridiculously bright or seriously dark lips, dramatic eyes – people can start forgetting about their skin. I think skin is the most important thing. An artist needs a nice, clean, smooth canvas to work on. You can’t have fabulous makeup without good skin underneath it all. Right now, I’m obsessed with skincare and I feel that the all-natural stuff is the way to go.
My favorite thing to do right now with makeup is keep it clean, fresh, and precise. I love to keep my lids free of eye shadow, apply a thick, winged out liquid liner along the top lashline, and add some lengthening mascara. I keep the waterline bare or line it with a little bit of white or flesh-toned liner. Then, I want a very perfected lip in either red, pink, or even purple!
