When it comes to changing up your style, your hair is one thing that can either make or break a look. It's all about the right cut, color, length- you name it! As we get older, hair tends to get a little bit more personal. The right look separates the 16 year olds from the 26 year old- and the 26 year olds from the 46 year olds.
But who says it should be that easy in giving away your age?! I say keep 'em guessing. And now you can...read on my friends...
Joseph Mullen, lead colorist at
Blackstones Salon in NYC, shares some helpful tips on how to look young and beautiful, and beat Mother Nature at her own game!
#1: Don’t Go Too Dark!According to Mullen, “Going too dark or venturing too far from your natural hair color is a guaranteed way to age yourself. I recommend sticking within a few shades of your natural hair color to maintain a youthful appearance."
For the summer, I'm considering coloring my hair. I've had the same hair color FOREVER and I am ready for a change. The change, however, won't come easy. I have chemically relaxed hair so I am afraid of adding even more chemicals and potentially damaging my hair. While my hair is relaxed, that isn't my greatest fear (a true hair stylist/colorist will know how to properly treat and c are for your hair as long as you speak to them about it). It's the fact that I don't know what color to get. What shade should I get? How light can I go? and most importantly, will I look good with it in the end??
Skip the guess work. Mullen advises, "It’s important to match your hair color to your skin-tone and eye color.”

Keri Hilson is my muse...this is the color I'd love to get done on me
#2: Get Your Paint On!“If you’re going to color your hair, definitely opt for highlights and have them 'painted' on. This will allow for a more natural look that grows in well without leaving dark thick roots. Hair painting is a great way to cut-back in visits to the salon which is perfect for this economy," says Mullen.
Most of my friends complain about pesky roots and having to get them touched up all. the. time. By painting the color on you really won't have much of an issue.
"As hair grows in the roots are not as noticeable, ultimately allowing for a younger appearance – especially if your roots are turning a tad bit gray.”

I LOVE Ciara's look and if I can't get an allover color, I'd opt for something like this
#3: Trust Your Gut!You hear it all the time, yet you never listen (at least I don't..ha!) I hardly ever trust my gut because so and so "know better than I do".
Lies.
It's your hair and nobody knows it better than you do.
“When it comes to hair, use common sense. If it seems like it might be a bad decision, it probably is. This goes for color, cut and styling decisions. Color and style is a sure way to make you appear older if done incorrectly. That’s why it’s important to go to a stylist you trust that can guide you in achieving styles you desire. Just because a color or style looks good on a celebrity, does not mean it will look good on you!”
If you're contemplating coloring your hair or just trying to change up your look in general, keep these tips in mind. There should be no reason that your hair (of all things) to give your age away. And if you're like me (I'm 21 but look 12) the right look can actually make you look a bit more mature (and less junior high-ish).
