Ever since I read the article on Frida Giannini in April's Harper's Bazaar I instantly fell in love with her. I definitely love her style. She's like a chic rocker chick who can transform into a sexy yet classy woman for evening.
So needless to say I was a bit excited when checking out style.com for pics of her Spring Summer 2009 collection.

I fell in love with the mix of short flowy spring dresses. These are supremely wonderful and I feel a wardrobe must have come Spring. My faves? It's a tie. Ya'll know I love all things purple and pink so the dress on Chanel Iman (first dress on the left) and Snejana Onopka (last dress on the right). The dress on Chanel Iman is wonderful as it's a darker purple so its great for a night out while Snejana's dress is lighter color and a bit more flowy so it's perfect for a daytime look.

The flowiness continues into the night except these are more bold solid colors (HOO-RAY for color!!). Looks like the maxi dress is returning for Spring 09. Again Captain Obvious that I am, I love the first dress on (purple one on Anja). Flowy yet elegant evening dresses. Perfect!

Not only that, there was the laid back cool of the "Frida pant" which has become somewhat of a staple for Gucci and the Fedora here is less Paris Hilton tacky and more fashionista cool.

Ahh yess...the super short yet ultra sexy suits. It reminds me of the safari rage that we went through a couple seasons back. This is a like the 20 year old's power suit...except rather than an office the she's out there to conquer the world.
I was really shocked to read less than stellar reviews of Giannini's collection this season.
As per New York Mag:
They say her work looks like something on the racks of Zara and isn't trend-setting, and her runway show is just designed to sell, sell, sell.
Many of the suits in the show — skinny pants cropped above the ankle with well-tailored jackets in vibrant greens and blues — could easily hit the shelves of Zara and H&M months before they get to Gucci’s boutiques. At first glance, there was nothing much about either the fabrics or silhouettes of the clothes that would make them stand out from fast-fashion imitators.

Ouch!
Cathy Horyn of the New York Times:
Giannini has become an expert not so much in expressing an idea as packaging it … But where was the element of surprise? And apart from the updated Jackie bags and chunky stone bracelets, how luxurious was it? The olive and khaki safari dresses, with zips and drawstrings, were cute and well-executed. But are they a look you expect from Gucci, or Liz Claiborne? Are they even a Look?
but it doesn't stop...WWD:
Gucci looks are all over Zara. The argument that they seem more appropriate to such a venue than to the upper echelons of luxury fashion hasn’t put a damper on sales of the real thing … [T]hese clothes bore all the exotica of a piñata party in Portsmouth. That, however, might be their genius. Ample anecdotal evidence suggests that most people aren’t interested in stylistic risk-taking, while many fall into the antisobriety camp.
Well, now I could see the whole H&M/ Zara comparison but I mean she's still a designer and selling clothes is her job! Who needs fantasy when your pockets are screaming REALITY! I could justify buying any of these pieces as they are not only aesthetically pleasing but they are functional!
Kudo Frida!
