Spaceships in my Back Yard...Chanel in Central Park

Yes you read correctly. Chanel will be in Central Park. Just not for sale.

This Mobile Art exhibit is one of Karl Lagerfeld's many projects with my fave brand of all time Chanel. Mobile Art is a traveling international exhibition showcased in a futuristic structure/container designed by Pritzker Prize-winning, London-based architect Zaha Hadid.

In other words it's a huge Star Trek-like thingie that'll be smack dab in the middle of Central Park.

In it will be the works of 15 contemporary artists (this is graet for me as in my quest to become more "cultured" I'm trying to get into art). Each artist was asked to create a piece that was in some way, shape, or form inspired by Chanel’s classic 2.55 quilted-style chain handbag (if you don't know this bag...shame on YOU!) And in case you didn't know, this bag is called the 2.55 because it was first issued in February 1955 (who said you don't learn anything from the internet).

This sucker has been to Hong Kong, Tokyo and is coming to New York, London, Moscow, and finally Paris in 2010 (the year I graduate college! I'm sensing a graduation trip!).

From what I gather, here are some facts:

-It's a
7,500-square-foot doughnut-shape structure, designed using computer software, and has a central courtyard.

-
Skylights admit natural light, and computer-generated lighting casts a rainbow of colors around the base of the exterior that glows day and night.

-Visitors entering the pavilion will be given MP3 players. On a track created by the sound artist Stephan Crasneanscki they will hear the French actress Jeanne Moreau discussing everything from sex and love to the secrets at the bottom of a woman’s handbag."

à la The New York Times.

This event will be FREE but it's suggested that visitors book timed tickets online (avoid lines I guess??) at chanel-mobileart.com and will be at Rumsey Playfield, midpark at 70th Street, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 9. I've tried this site and all that comes up is this really cool video but no booking place- it does say "SOON NEW YORK" on it so I'm assuming sometimes soon (ha).

Hope to see you there!
