born in the wrong decade...

I really think that I was born in the wrong decade.

I should have been a teen during the reign of the Supermodels. I should have been a teen when Manic Panic was the ish. I want to swing dance and sing the blues and jazz. I want to have been a teen when people were claiming FREE LOVE and dancing like fools. I should have been a teen when Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, The Runaways, and Pat Benetar held the title of true Girl Power.

Now I know not all of these trends were during the same decade but...simply put these times are plain boring. Sure I'm a product of the 90s (don't think that because you were born in 1987 or 1988 that makes you a product of the 80s...cuz your not) and I love that. I loved being a child in the 90s..but that's it...I was a CHILD.

This millennium crap just doesn't rock with me. Why am I on such a tirade? Because I want to have worn certain clothes the first time around and not replicas or lookalikes or fashion comebacks. I simply want to go in my closet pull it out and say, "I remember you...good thing I didn't throw you away"...

Everything in fashion is recycled and I want to be able to have it that first time around. Not wear something and have my mom say..."I used to wear that" Do we even have a trend that hasn't been worn/ used already? Is anything original anymore?

**sigh..** I digress...

What decade am I obsessed with this week (well actually..forever and always): '60s Mod
The 1960s have become synonymous with all the new, exciting, and radical events and trends of the period. I first became obsessed with the 60's in high school when my foray into fashion increased significantly (read: obsessed). For the first time I had something that I could openly indulge (I had kept my love of fashion a secret when I was younger. My mom never let me buy magazines except for WordUp! RightOn, etc. so whenever I went by my dad's house I always asked him to buy me Vogue and I'd read it in his room. I didn't understand the words-too big- but I loved looking at the pictures and imagining me in those ads). I remember looking at a picture of Diana Ross my mother had and listening to her old Motown records and just falling in love (this explains my disdain for current music and my love for old school pop, rock, and just plain music in general. The fluff we hear now is NOT music- with the occasional exceptions: Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, etc.

Anywhoo. It should come to no surprise that I instantly feel in love with Julie Haus' Peyton dress:
I love this dress- the wide neck, large buttons, bright color- makes me wanna throw on some white plastic hoops and hop on a Vespa (which I secretly want anyway).

I don't think anyone has quite captured the essence of 60s mod like Gwen Stefani did for L.A.MB. for her SS08 show. The hair, the makeup, the clothes...sheer perfection. I really do love how it looks more of an updated version rather than a copy past. For some reason-I don't know if it's because I know it's Gwen Stefani or if she actually managed to do this with the clothes itself- I'm getting a sense of rocker-mod (does that make any sense?)

The ultimate face of Sixties fashion:
Twiggy. She was THE super skinny model (sorry Kate!). Her large eyes, faux lashes, and that haircut singlehandedly changed the face of fashion. Hard to imagine that she was only on the map for four years then...gone.

ahh the volatile life of a supermodel.

I'm also obsessed with the 60's mod look! And Twiggy, girl I thought it was just me. I'm always trying to do an updated black version of her look. I adore the cropped hair, big lashes and a-line dresses.

I'm a child of 1962, so I had a Twiggy doll (they made her one of Barbie's "friends").

Anyhoo, I never thought of Gwen Stefani as modern day mod... I'd always thought of her as another Marilyn Monroe remake, but you make a good point for her being mod.

Forgot to add...

I think British R&B singer Estelle is perfectly mod! I adore her look!

I still haven't grasped the idea of mod. When I see it on Twiggy I get it, but I can't seem to master the concept with my clothes. :(
